SUMMER ABROAD IN GUANAJUATO, MEXICO INFORMATIONAL MEETING

The International Programs Office is holding an informational meeting on how Texas Tech Law students can earn law school credit while studying abroad this summer in Guanajuato, Mexico. This study abroad program is administered by the Summer Law Institute, which is a consortium of four law schools including Texas Tech.

The University of Guanajuato was founded in 1606 and is located in the silver-mining highlands of central Mexico. Guanajuato is one of the oldest colonial cities in Mexico and was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1988. Its Spanish colonial architecture and medieval influences have led many to compare it with Toledo, Spain.

As trade relations with Mexico and the rest of Latin America continue to expand, it is important that future practitioners have an opportunity to prepare for international legal opportunities that will continue to multiply. Mexican laws have radically changed over the last five years making it easier for foreign investors to conduct business in Mexico, and opening up areas of commerce that were previously reserved for government monopolies, especially in the areas of oil, gas and electricity. As the third largest trading partner of the United States, an understanding of the Mexican legal system, Mexican culture, and Mexican history are essential for any law student hoping to be competitive in the legal marketplace of the future. The Summer Law Institute helps provide students with a competitive edge by providing them options to study, interact and work in Mexico under the direction of professors not only from the consortium law schools, but professors, practitioners and jurists invited from throughout the United States and Mexico.

Most students have described the program as one of the best experiences of their law school career.

Spanish language proficiency is not required for the program. Students can attend either session I, session II, or both sessions for a total of six maximum credits over a four week period. Participating students will then have the option to participate in a two week externship, allowing students to work with Mexican lawyers, judges, and governmental officials, while earning an additional two hours of credit.

Please make plans to attend this informational session to learn more about the Summer Law Institute. http://www.law.ttu.edu/acp/programs/international/guanajuato/
