Legal Practice Teaching Fellow

Each Legal Practice Professor will be assigned a Fellow for each section of LP taught (for the 2015-2016 school year, we anticipate 12 positions).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

* attend an afternoon session of 1-L orientation (TBA).
* attend training sessions the first week of classes and during the semester.
* attend most LP class meetings for the section assigned.
* meet with his/her LP Professor on a regular basis (typically, weekly).
* assist the LP Professor with development of teaching materials by performing research, doing dry runs on draft exercises, and offering other assistance at the request of the LP Professor.
* assist in grading objective exercises (e.g., research exercises) and other assignments and in record-keeping for ICW exercises.
* hold office hours (required minimum 2/week) at a time and place accessible to students.
* offer tutorial sessions per program requirements and individual LP Professors’ preferences.
* assist with roleplaying exercises.
* assist with oral arguments (e.g., offering practice rounds, judging).
* assist students with library research.
* refrain from dating or close personal relationships with students in his/her section.
* complete university-mandated EEOC training.

Term: The term for an appointment as a Fellow is for one semester with the expectation and preference that a Fellow who performs satisfactorily in the fall semester will continue in the spring. A Fellow may serve up to four semesters. A term may not be split between two Fellows.

Compensation: Each Fellow will be paid a stipend each semester. We anticipate that the stipend will be $1000 per semester. The expected average workload is approximately 8-10 hours per week; however, the workload will not be evenly distributed (e.g., weeks when a Fellow is grading research exercises will be more work- and time-intensive).

Qualifications: A successful applicant will be a second- or third-year student during the term of appointment. While the threshold GPA requirement is 2.7, students who received a “B” or better in each semester of Legal Practice will receive preferential consideration. Strong research and writing skills are essential, as is an ability to relate well to first-year students, to communicate clearly, and to work effectively as part of the LP Program.

A student may not serve as both a Fellow and a tutor.

Application Process: A student who is interested in serving as a Fellow should submit the following by May 1, 2015: (1) a cover letter that includes a statement of interest and indicates any preference for the LP Professor with whom the student would like to work, as well as whether the applicant would be a returning LPTF, (2) a resume with references, (3) a 5-7 page writing sample (an LP assignment or portion thereof is fine), (4) a transcript (unofficial is fine), and (5) a tentative class schedule for 2015-2016 (if you are interested in being a Fellow only for a specific LP Professor, please check the class schedule to be sure that you do not have irresolvable conflicts with that professor’s sections). Applications will be accepted and considered on a rolling basis; however, submissions by May 1 will receive fullest consideration. Acceptance will be contingent on the student’s achieving the grades set out above.

The application materials should be addressed as follows and may be dropped off on the second floor:
