7th Annual Martin Luther King Commemorative Event
Join us as we welcome Arturo Bagley, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s nephew, as we hear personal stories reflecting on his legacy!
Refreshments provided.

Arturo S. Bagley earned a B.A. with high honors in history from Emory University, where he was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa, a J.D. from the Yale Law School, and an M.A. in U.S. History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received an Emmy nomination for outstanding research on the documentary film W.E.B. Du Bois: A Biography in Four Voices. He has almost twenty-six years of experience as an educator, having taught at Chapel Hill, at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania (the first college-degree granting HBCU in the country, founded in 1854), at Tower Hill School in Delaware, and currently at the Rivers School in Massachusetts. He has taught courses in African American History, World History, and U.S. History. He has also taught The Supreme Court, Race, and Civil Rights, examining the history of race through Supreme Court opinions, and Justice, which explores how people’s perceptions of present-day controversies are affected by various philosophies including utilitarianism, libertarianism, Immanuel Kant’s categorical imperative, and John Rawls’ theory of justice.

Mr. Bagley’s interest in U.S. History, and African American History in particular, was sparked by observing the work of his parents who were both university educators. His mother, Edythe Scott Bagley, was an American author, activist, and educator, who worked behind the scenes to assist her younger sister Coretta Scott King and her sister’s husband, Martin Luther King, Jr. promote the Civil Rights Movement. As such, he was a witness to and learned firsthand about many of the crucial events of that era. Mr. Bagley also served on the Board of Directors for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Non-Violent Social Change along with his cousins and Andrew Young, an American politician, diplomat, and activist, who was a close confidant to his uncle, Martin Luther King, Jr.
