Collin County Young Lawyers Judicial Internship Program Now Open in Symplicity

The Collin County Young Lawyers Association (CCYLA) invites first and second year Texas Tech School of Law students to apply for judicial internships with the Collin County District Court Judges and County Court Judges, in McKinney, Texas. Applicants must have completed first-year civil procedure and legal writing courses before June 2016. Courses in evidence and criminal procedure are helpful but not required.

Participating judges and the CCYLA will conduct phone interviews in February and will make final selections by March 7. Internships are full-time and are unpaid; there will be two six week sessions, from May 23 to July 1, 2016 and July 5 to August 12, 2016, although interns assigned to specific judges may have slightly different schedules, as determined by those judges and interns. Some interns will be assigned to a particular judge while others will work with multiple judges.
All interns selected for either session must participate in the sole orientation program that will be on Thursday, May 19, 2015, from 11 am to 2 pm in the Collin County Courthouse. Attendance at the orientation program is mandatory – students may not serve as interns in either session if they do not attend this orientation (unless given permission from CCYLA). Because Texas Tech University School of Law finals period goes through May 20, a separate orientation program will be held for those students.

Applicants should submit the following materials through the CCYLA Judicial Internship Program under the Jobs tab in Symplicity by February 8:

  1. The completed Application Form, which includes, along with certain basic information, (a) the dates during the summer when the applicant is available, and (b) a short personal statement explaining the contributions the applicant hopes to make during the internship, as well as the experience the applicant hopes the internship will provide. The application form can be located in the Resources tab. Extra pages may not be attached;
  2. The applicant’s one-page resume; and
  3. The applicant’s unofficial law school transcript.

Texas Tech School of Law Career Services will collect all applications. The application materials will be submitted by Tuesday, February 9, 2016. Applications will be supplied to the CCYLA in a single packet the following day – there is no advantage to being the first application submitted. That being said, late applications will not be accepted, and application materials cannot be supplemented after the deadline. If you have questions, contact Paula Smith in the Office of Career Services at paula.smith@ttu.edu.
