DUE TODAY: Inn of Court - Student Membership
The new chapter of the American Inns of Court is wrapping up its first year in Lubbock. The Texas Tech University School of Law American Inn of Court is the first Inn established in West Texas. The Americans Inns of Court is a national organization that actively engages more than 25,000 judges, attorneys, law professors, and law students. The Mission of the American Inns of Court is “to foster excellence in professionalism, ethics, civility, and legal skills.” The Inn achieves this goal by gathering local attorneys for dinner once a month, during which the members interact with each other and also participate in continuing legal education programs, most frequently emphasizing ethics, professionalism, civility, and practice skills. More senior attorneys serve as mentors for more junior members.

Tracing its origins to 13th century England, when new attorneys apprenticed in an “Inn,” membership in an American Inn is composed of the following categories: Masters of the Bench—judges, experienced lawyers, and law professors; Barristers—lawyers with some experience who do not meet the minimum requirements for Masters; Associates—lawyers who do not meet the minimum requirement for Barristers; and Pupils—law students.

The Texas Tech Inn seeks 10 students for its pupil positions. (We will also select 2–4 students to serve as substitutes; substitutes attend meetings on an as-needed basis if a non-student Inn member cannot attend a particular meeting.) If you are interested, please submit a letter of interest addressed to Dean Darby Dickerson and a current resume to Corey Clem in the Dean’s Office by Tuesday, April 15, 2014.

In your letter, please include the following information:
  • Your interest in being an Inn member;
  • What you hope to achieve by serving as an Inn;
  • Your willingness to attend all meetings and to participate with your pupilage group (we will make selections after Regional Externship Offers are made, so please let us know if you have applied for this program);
  • Your anticipated graduation date;
  • Where you would like to practice after graduation; and
  • What type of law you would like to practice after graduation.

The Inn will meet the second Tuesday of most school months, in the Law School Forum, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. Please note that you must be able to make the following Inn meetings:

September 16, 2014
October 14, 2014
November 11, 2014
February 10, 2015
March 10, 2015
April 14, 2015

A student member may serve only a one-year term. Preference will be given to those who graduate in May 2015. (If you graduate before May 2014, please check the Lubbock Area Bar Association newsletter for an application; you may apply as an Associate member.) Dues for the year will be $50.00 per student. Student dues are heavily subsidized by other Inn members and cover national dues, dinner at each meeting, and various administrative costs associated with Inn administration.
